Department Store Fraud
An individual purchased items from Macy’s Department Store with a Chase Credit card. Shortly after, he reportedly made an insurance claim, stating, his “fanny pack” containing his watch, 2 pairs of cuff links, and Gucci sunglasses fell overboard while on an ocean cruise. When asked for verification of the cruise, he was unable to provide the documentation requested, which raised “Red Flags”. An NICB agent reviewed the questionable claim, spoke with the special investigator and requested the insurance claim file. During the investigation, it was indicated the suspect had reportedly returned the cuff links and watch back to Macy’s for a full refund after making the claim. Macy’s refunded the credit card used however, the insured continued to call their Insurance repeatedly and ask when he would get a check from the claim. Copies of all the transactions were ascertained from Macy’s’ and Chase , which appeared to confirm the loss reported by the suspect was false and fraudulent. NICB contacted and communicate the suspected insurance fraud probable cause to the Police Department Detective. The Detective agreed to further investigate the incident. NICB provided the Detective with the Insurance claim file information and details of the investigation. The Detective submitted a Felony Warrant request to the County Prosecutors Office to be reviewed. The warrant was approved and signed by the District Court Judge. Felony warrant arrest for alleged Insurance Fraud has been authorized for the individual.
