The police report indicated that the defendants, who have been identified as José Braulio Acosta, Harold Vásquez, Alexander Angulo, Talia González and Sahimy Molina, faked a car accident last Monday at the intersection of 38th Street and 87th Place in southwest Miami, with the sole purpose of filing false claims with insurance companies.

The group said another driver ran a stop sign and hit them. However, an investigation later revealed that it was all a scam to defraud insurance companies.

The Hispanic network said that this type of scam is not new in Miami, and its frequency has increased significantly lately.

This type of crime is detrimental to insurance companies, but also to their clients through higher insurance premiums, experts said.

"If insurance companies are losing millions of dollars to fraud, the only way to stay in business is to raise premiums," said an experienced insurance agent in South Florida.

According to investigations, these scams even include clinics that lend themselves to fraud by reporting injuries that have never occurred, in fake accidents.

"Our officers are trained to spot suspicious accidents. When something doesn't add up, they call detectives, who conduct extensive interviews to unmask false stories," said Argemis Colomé, spokesman for the Miami-Dade Police Department.

Miami-Dade police have also disclosed that they are investigating several clinics in the county in an attempt to dismantle criminal networks with these operations.
