Greene County Volunteer Firefighter Arrested for Insurance Fraud, Arson

Office of Commissioner of Insurance and Safety Fire, March 8, 2023

ATLANTA – Insurance and Safety Fire Commissioner John F. King announced today that Todd Anthony, 56, of Greensboro, has been charged with insurance fraud and 1st-degree arson.

At 12:52 a.m. on March 16th, 2022, the Greene County Fire Department responded to a residential fire on Gray Horse Road in Greensboro. Mr. Anthony, a volunteer firefighter and owner of the residence, said that a cooking accident caused the fire.

“Following a nearly year-long joint investigation with the Greene County Sheriff’s Office, burn-pattern analysis of the incident proved Mr. Anthony’s story to be misleading,” said Commissioner King. “Investigators determined the fire did not originate in the kitchen and instead was intentionally set in other parts of the home. It is evident that the suspect set fire to the residence in an attempt to obtain an insurance payout of approximately $700,000.”

Mr. Anthony was taken into custody by the Greene County Sheriff's Office on March 3rd, 2023.
