NICB Agents Help Recover Stolen Motocross Bike
The National Insurance Crime Bureau (NICB) has field investigators strategically placed throughout the nation, who work closely with law enforcement and insurance companies. They work together to combat these opportunistic fraudsters by identifying their schemes and scams and bringing the fraudsters to justice.
NICB brings almost 109 years of experience identifying and investigating suspicious insurance claims and vehicle theft. Fraud and insurance theft is not a victimless crime. The ripple effect created by these bad actors, drive up insurance premiums across the nation.
One of the many things we do here at NICB is assist members in locating, identifying, and returning stolen vehicles. The National Crime Information Center purges unrecovered stolen vehicle records that have been in the system four years plus the year of entry. NICB maintains these “purged” NCIC records in perpetuity which enables NICB to identify older thefts for law enforcement, our members and the public.
Our regional agents and our Investigative Assistance (IA) Group are the point of contact for law enforcement agency inquiries for stolen vehicle information and investigations. Recently, our NCIC purged records database once again made national headlines after a motocross bike owner was reunited with his Kawasaki bike that was stolen from him 27 years ago.
The Hartford Connecticut Police Department contacted NICB asking for assistance with the recovery of a 1990 Kawasaki KX-125. The motorcycle was stolen on 10/17/1992 from its owner who resided in Waterbury, Connecticut. NICB Special Agent David Christiana examined the motorcycle and discovered that the VIN and other identifying markings had been obliterated or removed. Christiana contacted NICB Investigative Assistants Linda Taylor and John Gonzalez and together they identified the motorcycle, reviewed NICB’s shipping history data and worked with the dealership to identify the last legal owner of the motorcycle. Special Agent Richard Baxter assisted as well. The result was another NICB success story reuniting a motorcycle stolen nearly 30 years ago with its owner.
Our field agents are well-known for their expertise in vehicle identification and for solving insurance crimes. That experience, with support from an extensive analytical and investigative support staff, coupled with NICB’s national and international law enforcement connections and databases makes NICB so unique.
